Low-Luminosity Seyfert Nuclei

چکیده
We describe a new sample of Seyfert nuclei discovered during the course of an optical spectroscopic survey of nearby galaxies. The majority of the objects, many recognized for the first time, have luminosities much lower than those of classical Seyferts and populate the faint end of the AGN luminosity function. A significant fraction of the nuclei emit broad Hα emission qualitatively similar to the broad lines seen in classical Seyfert 1 nuclei and QSOs.

Nuclear Luminosities and Radio Loudness of Seyfert Nuclei
Historically, Seyfert nuclei have been considered to be radio-quiet active galactic nuclei (AGNs). We question this widely held assumption by showing that the distribution of the radio-to-optical luminosity ratio, R ≡ Lν(6 cm)/Lν(B), when properly measured for the nuclear component, places the majority of type 1 Seyfert nuclei in the category of radio-loud AGNs, defined here as objects with R ≥...
متن کاملA Search for “ Dwarf ” Seyfert Nuclei . IV . Nuclei with Broad H α Emission
We present the results of an optical spectroscopic survey designed to search for low-luminosity, “dwarf” Seyfert nuclei in a magnitude-limited (BT ≤ 12.5 mag) sample of 486 bright, northern galaxies. Moderate-resolution spectra of exceptionally high quality were obtained in part to detect broad Hα emission, similar in character to, but much weaker than, the broad permitted lines that define typ...
متن کاملThe local luminosity function of QSOs and Seyfert 1 nuclei
We present the analysis of a new flux-limited sample of bright quasars and Seyfert 1 galaxies in an effective area of 611 deg2, drawn from the Hamburg/ESO survey. We confirm recent claims that bright quasars have a higher surface density than previously thought. Special care was taken to avoid morphological and photometric biases against low-redshift quasars, and about 50% of the sample objects...

An unprecedentedly large number of LINERs has been discovered in a recently completed optical spectroscopic survey of nearby galaxies, allowing several statistical properties of the host galaxies and of the lineemitting regions to be examined reliably for the first time. As a consequence of the many detections and some revised classifications, the detailed demographics of emission-line nuclei h...
متن کاملNarrow Line Seyfert 1 Galaxies and the Evolution of Galaxies & Active Galaxies
Narrow Line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) are intriguing due to their continuum as well as emission line properties. The observed peculiar properties of the NLS1s are believed to be due to accretion rate close to Eddington limit. As a consequence, for a given luminosity, NLS1s have smaller black hole (BH) masses compared to normal Seyfert galaxies. Here we argue that NLS1s might be Seyfert galaxie...
